"A mother should not have to die"

“You cannot tackle maternal mortality in isolation—you need sustained investment in a functioning workplace,” says Mama Zeena, a veteran midwife herself, who is now training the new midwifery students in Zwedru. She has delivered babies in the world’s most challenging humanitarian contexts: refugee camps in Darfur, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Chad. “If a mother has access to a trained midwife, a mother should not have to die, a woman should not lose her baby,” she concludes.
