Liberia has precious few midwives

Emily’s story echoes the struggle of so many women living in fragile states. With less than one health worker per 1,000 people, fragile states don’t have the health workforce or services in place to tackle maternal mortality. Liberia, a largely rural country, has one of the ten highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Investment in a rapid scale-up of midwifery training is urgently needed. Florence Kahn, pictured above, is in the care of a certified midwife who will help her and her baby through a safe delivery.
