Claudine, 15, can't recall what happened during the quake, but she's lucky to be alive. On her way to class, her school building collapsed. She survived but with considerable injuries. She lost part of her forearm when a large piece of masonry cut through her right wrist, crushing the bone. To treat Claudine, Merlin surgeons have created a flap on her stomach and hope live tissue will grow to replace the parts on her arm that took the brunt of the blow. Now homeless, Claudine's mother often comes to stay with her daughter while she recovers in the ward.
