In the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake disaster, 21-year-old Emmanuel was more preoccupied with finding surviving family members than the deep cut on his right calf. The tropical heat, dust, and lack of medical attention quickly led to a life-threatening infection, which Merlin doctors hoped they could stem in time. "Then things took a turn for the worse and there was a risk of septicemia," said Merlin surgeon Sanjib Majumder with regret. Once an active soccer player, Emmanuel sadly lost his leg and joined Haiti's estimated 2,000 post-disaster amputees who will need long-term health care and rehabilitation.
