Haiti: Merlin scales up operation

January 19 2010

As estimates put Haiti’s death toll at 200,000, Merlin has ramped up its operation to meet the massive needs of those who survived last week’s earthquake.

We are setting up bases in three key areas in and around Port-au-Prince, where people are struggling to access basic necessities.

In Delmas 33, a suburb of Port-au-Prince that was devastated by the earthquake, we are delivering basic health care through a network of static and mobile clinics, with a main focus on our surgical operations.

In Léogâne and Petit-Goâve, both coastal towns to the west of Port-au-Prince which were severely damaged, we are working with a partner NGO to deliver health care. Here, we are also working on a network of static and mobile clinics to deliver basic health care, screening and referral of patients to our surgeons as well as to hospitals.

Pete Sweetnam, Merlin’s Director of Programs, says: “There are very real unmet needs to address in these areas, and our focus right now is making sure we can reach as many people as possible. Our emergency team is also facing significant challenges as they struggle to find adequate food and clean water. Earlier today one of our logisticians had to search for four hours to get water for our team of five. The situation in Haiti is not easy for anyone, but we’re getting there.”
