Cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe

December 2 2008

Members of Merlin’s Emergency Response Team are currently deployed in Zimbabwe where the UN is reporting 484 cholera deaths and nearly 11,700 more suspected cases. Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health, David Parirenyatwa, says that cholera now affects nine out of 10 provinces in the country.

To help contain the outbreak, Merlin is in negotiations with the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to gain operational access to cholera affected areas.

Medicine, water and sanitation equipment are being prepared just outside Zimbabwe for a quick response.
