A power sharing deal has been reached between the Kenyan government and the opposition, following extended negotiations mediated by Kofi Annan, eminent African Elders and the Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete.

The agreement between President Kibaki and the opposition leader Raila Odinga was signed on February 28th, giving Kenyans hope that the two-month, post-election crisis may soon be over.

Merlin's emergency response continues

Despite the promise of peace, our emergency work will continue. It has to - there are over 17,000 people living in 14 makeshift camps who are relying solely on us for their medical care.

They've all been made homeless by the crisis and most feel, with the ink not yet dry on the peace agreement, it's too early to return home. Many have no home to go back to.

Merlin has three mobile medical teams running weekly clinics in all 14 sites in North Nakuru. So far we've treated 2,430 patients, vaccinated 398 children under five years old and transported 28 seriously ill patients to the district hospital. By far the most common cause of illness is throat infection, followed by malaria.

Your support is still urgently needed

Our teams are already stretched: three teams are simply not enough to cover all the sites as effectively as we'd like. We're concerned too about the surge in malaria cases once the long rains arrive in mid-March. Malaria can kill quickly - a weekly clinic simply won't give us enough time to spot, diagnose and treat the young children who are so vulnerable to infection.

Running more clinics, more frequently is crucial.
