Midwives are at the heart of maternal survival

A healthy new mother holds her child after giving birth at the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital in Zwedru, Liberia. While lasting peace has finally settled after a brutal 14-year civil war, Liberia's mothers continue to face a very uncertain future. As one of the world’s fragile states, maternal mortality rates remain unacceptably high. According to a recent UN report, the number of women dying in childbirth has nearly doubled since the 1980s. In 2008, 1,200 out of every 100,000 women lost their lives—largely from preventable causes.
